Fifteen Lockport Township High School students participated in the 2016 UIC Department of Germanic Studies German High School Day, where more than 400 high school students from 19 area high schools competed in a variety of expertise areas.
Awards earned for LTHS include a second-place trophy for a skit converting the current contentious U.S. presidential debate into a German context by Joseph Diamond, Charles Peckman and Rachel Maida. Gabriela Kuderski received a third-place trophy in the cover art category with a colorful global sunset skyline formed by the silhouettes of famous German buildings. Adriana Watson also received a third-place trophy in poetry for a dramatic interpretation of a German poem by August von Platen, “Wie rafft’ ich mich auf in der Nacht.”
The LTHS team of Aubrey Friedrich, Caitlyn Krueger and Sarah Lilly also won a third-place trophy for their video portraying the importance of learning languages for securing jobs, using a Lufthansa Airlines position as an example.
The final judges in the trophy rounds included the Consul General of Germany, the Honorary Consuls of Austria and Switzerland, the Director of the Goethe-Institut and the Vice President of the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest.
Several more students represented Lockport well at the event, having been selected in competitions at Lockport.
