Two men shot to death in Joliet

By Brian Stanley
bstanley@buglenewspapers.com

Two 26-year-old men were shot to death in separate incidents in Joliet last week.

The first occurred at 11:54 a.m.

March 25 when shots were reported near Cutter Avenue and Ada Street.

Officers arrived to find Dimitri Allen laying in the front yard of a Cutter Avenue residence.

Allen, who had been shot in the chest, was taken to Silver Cross Hospital but died from his injuries. Sgt. Chris Botzum said Allen lived in the area where he was found.

“At this point, we have not developed any suspect information to release,” Botzum said late last week. Investigators are seeking help from the public – including any residents of the Forest Park neighborhood with outside surveillance cameras.

According to court records, Allen was being sought for arrest at the time of his death for violating probation after pleading guilty to delivery of cannabis in 2016.

At 7:46 p.m. March 27, shots were reported in the 1000 block of Magnolia Avenue where police found Jakias Holman behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Trailblazer still running in the street. Paramedics were unable to revive Holman who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. No one else was in the vehicle with Holman when police arrived, Botzum said.

Police records show Holman was also arrested on charges of delivery of cannabis charges in 2016 — one block from where Allen was later killed.

Holman, who was also charged with unlawful use of a weapon, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance later that year and was released on probation after spending six months in the Will County jail.

Botzum said last week detectives had not established if the slayings are connected.

Anyone with information on either case is asked to call investigators at (815) 724-3020 or anonymously call CrimeStoppers at (800) 323-6734.

CrimeStoppers offers rewards of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Bolingbrook duo leads All-Area team

Every year, there is only one team that can end the season in each class as a champion.

That team the past two seasons in Class 4A has been Belleville West. This year, the path to the repeat went through the Illinois State University Super-sectional where West defeated the Raiders.

The loss not only ended the dreams of the Raiders bringing another state trophy back to Bolingbrook, it also ended the career of two players who have been a huge part of the Raiders’ success the last four years in Tyler Cochran and Joseph Yesufu.

On the season, Yesufu averaged 16.5 points, 3.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game, while Cochran, who was hurt for the early part of the season, averaged 14 points, 9.5 rebounds and two steals per contest.

Yesufu earned a pair of all-state honors as he was named to the Class 4A Illinois Basketball Coached Association second team and was honorable mention all-state by the Associated Press.

For their efforts, the Raider tandem have been named as 2019 Voyager Media Boys Basketball Co-Players of the Year.

“Tyler and I work out together a lot and our main goal is to get each other better and we constantly have pushed each other since freshman year to do that,” Yesufu said. “In middle school, we competed against each other and we were enemies, but we grew into being best friends.”

Early in the season it was Yesufu’s team to lead with Cochran injuring his finger the day before the opening game of the season.

Sitting out wasn’t how the Northern Illinois University-bound Cochran wanted to start his senior year.

“It was tough having to be basically a player coach while I was hurt early. I had to see things from the coaches’ perspective and help the guys either on the court or off – getting water or being there and telling them how I see it and helping them any way I can,” he said. “Coming back, I felt like I had something to prove. We gave it our all and it just wasn’t enough, but we lost to the best.”

The one thing that has been the same in both Cochran’s and Yesufu’s game since they cracked the varsity roster is their ability and willingness to do whatever is needed to help the team win.

“Ever since I was a freshman, coach (Rob) Brost has talked about being a good player and I feel I can do whatever he needs done no matter if it is to score 30, to score five or score none and get rebounds, getting steals and playing defense,” Cochran said. “Scoring is cool and all, but at the end of the day, it is all about getting the W and make sure I play my hardest – that’s what matters most to me.”

As sophomores, the duo earned third-place medals at the state tournament.

“We accomplished a lot as a team,” Yesufu said. “Although it didn’t end with a state championship, I feel we left a legacy at Bolingbrook.”

Other members of the first team are:

THE MILWAUKEE COUNTY ZOO TO OPEN ADVENTURE AFRICA PHASE I: ELEPHANT EXHIBIT

The Milwaukee County Zoo is proud to announce its new Elephant Exhibit, transforming one-fourth of the Zoo’s current layout, will officially open to visitors Saturday, May 4, with a “grand reveal” and opening day activities at 10 a.m.

“The new Elephant Exhibit has been a monumental and heartfelt project for many Zoo staff since the commitment was made in 2013 to keep African elephants in the collection,” says Zoo Director Chuck Wikenhauser. “This first phase of the Adventure Africa project showcases African elephants and the various state-of-the-art amenities and renovations necessary to give these animals the best possible care throughout their lives. This is an exciting time for the Zoo and our visitors, and we couldn’t be happier.”

The new 20,000-square-foot Elephant Care Center features a recreation room with both sand and padded floors, five individual stalls for training and husbandry (allowing the elephants to participate in their own healthcare) and expansive space for enrichment activities.

Indoor enrichment items include hay-filled barrels that zookeepers are able to hang from the ceiling which allow the elephants to exercise their trunk muscles, reaching up to these high-hanging devices. Elephants in the wild would behave similarly, reaching high into the tree canopies, extending their trunks for branches and leaves to eat.

The 1.6-acre outdoor habitat (which alone is 4 times greater in size than the entire former Elephant Exhibit) features a watering hole, able to accommodate three fully-submerged elephants, feeding and enrichment walls, shade structures and even a self-activating shower. A demonstration pavilion with shaded visitor seating allows an up-close look at how keepers work with the elephants to offer the highest level of care through daily training and interactions.

Through interpretive graphics and interactives, the exhibit depicts “A Day in the Life of an Elephant,” highlighting daily routines for elephants living in human care and elephants living in the wild. It’s the Zoo’s hope that visitors see the overriding goal was to make this entire habitat, both indoor and out, the most normal as possible for elephant behavior in a zoo setting, while also addressing the physical, social and psychological needs of the animals.

The Conservation Outpost (the re-purposed Wolf Woods cabin) serves to educate visitors about elephants, through audio and visual interpretations, and includes an important “call to action” for visitor involvement in the plight of wild elephants. With the situation of elephants in the wild so precarious, it’s important for those who truly care about elephants to take action before it’s too late. (Elephants are currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN — International Union for Conservation of Nature — Red List of Threatened Species.)

Two new mixed species exhibits complement the Elephant Exhibit: the African Forest displays bongo and yellow-back duiker, and Impala Plains features zebra, impala and African crowned cranes.

The new exhibit meets the Association of Zoo and Aquariums’ (AZA) standards for elephant care and can accommodate up to five elephants, including bull (male) elephants. The Zoo will keep current elephants, Ruth and Brittany, and investigate options for additional elephants to bring in.

“Of the 235 AZA-accredited zoos in the U.S., 66 currently display elephants,” continues Wikenhauser. “Having these magnificent animals in our care is a privilege and a responsibility we do not take lightly; we’re committed to giving them the best life possible.”

The $16.6 million Elephant Exhibit and the complementing mixed species exhibits were made possible with half of the funds coming from the Zoological Society of Milwaukee, and the remaining half funded by Milwaukee County.

“I’m thrilled for the residents of Milwaukee County to share and enjoy this very significant addition to the Zoo,” comments Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele. “The renovations were necessary, not only for the elephants, but for the staff’s ability to offer the highest level of care. The new exhibit also keeps pace with the quality of animal exhibits at other Midwest zoos.”

Belmont Little League gets help from the community after robbers left it scrambling just weeks before the start of the season

By Mark Gregory

On March 22, just weeks before the start of the 2019 season, Belmont Little League suffered a big blow when much of its equipment was stolen from a shed on the property.

Rolls of fencing, fence posts, draggers, stainless steel stuff from the concession stand that was stored in the shed and even some equipment for the teams was all gone.

“We went a couple of days trying to come up with a game plan,” said vice president of Belmont Dan Vestal. “We dug into our own pockets and realized that wasn’t going to put a dent in it – the police estimated it at like $3,000 of stuff gone.”

Vestal then turned to the local media and WJOL host Scott Slocum.

“I had met Scott Slocum like four or five years ago at an event and his name popped back into my head and I reached out to him and explained the situation and told him that we didn’t know what way to turn and asked him for direction,” Vestal said. “He put us on the radio and it has taken off.

“It has been a humbling experience. I never expected the outpouring of support from the city. So many times you hear about the bad things, not the good things.

It has been a wonderful response. We have had cash donations, we are getting equipment from all over to make sure the kids have it for the start of the season. There is never a good time for this to happen, but for it to happen right before the start of the season, it just compounds the matter.”

Belmont Little League has been around since 1951 and is all about helping the community. The league is less worried about team records and is more concerned about teaching the game the right way. Vestal said board members have even assisted with league fees if a family falls on hard times.

It is that sense of community and family that has helped good things come out of a bad situation, teaching the Belmont players life lessons.

“It has renewed my faith in people. It has been an emotional roller coaster – we have older people, kids, everyone coming to help. We had a sports store donate boxes of equipment. We have had families donating some of their stuff. It puts it all in perspective,” he said. “I coach a 13-year-old team and two of the kids said, we understand what happened, but they didn’t understand why people who don’t know them are stepping up and helping. We told them it’s a chance to pay it forward.

We told them that someday there will be a moment that defines them and if they remember this, it will only make them a better person. This is a chance to talk about something good that came from something bad.

The official opening day for

Our official opening day is April 20 at 10 a.m. and we are inviting everyone that has helped us so that as a group we can say thank you.

State Board honors two schools for high performance and closing the achievement gap

The National Title I Association has recognized Eisenhower Academy in Joliet Public Schools District 86 as a National Title I Distinguished School.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) nominated Eisenhower Academy for the honor based on its exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years.

ISBE honored both schools (Eisenhower and Washington Elementary) at the annual statewide Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Conference Feb. 11-13 in Chicago.

The National Title I Association recognized the schools Jan. 31 at its annual conference in Kansas City, Mo.

“Only up to two schools per state can receive this award,” said Sandra Zalewski, Director for Communications and Development. “We were ecstatic when we found out, a lot of hard work went into this award.”

Title I is the cornerstone of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act, reauthorized in 2015 as ESSA.

Title I provides funding for students in schools that serve low-income communities, where Eisenhower is one of the schools that fall under that category.

Every student at Eisenhower Academy is eligible to receive free lunches based on Joliet Public Schools’ overall low-income student percentage.

Eighty-four percent of students met or exceeded standards in math on the state’s accountability assessment in 2018, and 82 percent met or exceeded standards in English language arts.

“It’s a wonderful accomplishment for the District as whole,” Zalewski said. “We are just so proud of our students and staff for receiving this prestigious award.”

Eisenhower Academy is a public magnet school with a staff committed to providing a structured educational setting for students with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math.

After being nominated by the Illinois School Board Association along with Washington Elementary last fall, Zalewski said the entire process was exhilarating.

An application process had to begin, followed by a nominating process, uploading information where it finished by being told in late December through early January Eisenhower would officially be a top school.

“We admittedly got super excited and let all of our parents and staff know what was going on with the award,” Zalewski said. “It’s very rewarding to see the grind of every day hard work which we see all the time paying off so greatly for everyone involved in this process.”

Joliet club donates to Plainfield Park District

The Plainfield Park District recently received a $500 donation from the Joliet Bicycle Club.

Club president Rob Weiss said that the local non-profit organization regularly makes donations to communities where the club’s members ride trails throughout the year.Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Each year, the group organizes a 100-mile bike ride, the “4th of July Century,” which departs from Plainfield and ends in Plattville. The event attracts about 900 riders and also serves as the organization’s main fundraiser for the year.

Most of the money raised then gets donated to area communities he said.

“We regularly ride on Plainfield Park District property,” he said, of the Park District’s 10-plus miles of bike trails.

“They’ve always been very accommodating to us and we like to give back to the communities where we ride.”

The group’s mission, he said, includes advocating for safer cycling, and improving conditions for biking.

The donation will be used for future bike path development said Plainfield Park District Finance Director Maureen Nugent.

Plainfield Park District maintains 32 bike and walking trails throughout its 43-square mile district, which serves over 106,000 residents.

Some of the more extensive trail routes in the Park District include:

  • The Great Divide Bike Trail: Starts at Old Renwick Rd. and runs south connecting with the Old Renwick Trail Park and ending at the pond along Indian Head Ln.
  • Oaks at Van Horn: Trail extends south from Van Horn Woods parallel to W. Frontage Rd. and accessible from just inside the eastern entrance of the Old Oaks Subdivision.
  • Normantown Trail: A bike trail accessible from the W. 127th St. near the intersection of W. 127th St. & Rt. 30. The trail runs south parallel to Rt. 30 and ends at 125th St.
  • Fort Beggs Bike Trail (North and South): The South Trail starts at Theodore St. and runs north following the power lines and ends at the Du Page River. The North Fort Beggs Bike Trail starts at the Streams Recreation Facility and follows the power lines north to Fort Beggs Dr. with connecting paths leading to either Electric Park or Village Green Park.

Two people drown in the DuPage River

By Brian Stanley

Two people drowned March 31 in the DuPage River near the Hammel Woods Dam in Shorewood.

About 5:50 p.m. Abraham Ramos, 28, of Palatine, went into the water near the dam, which is yards from where Route 52 passes over the river. While the shore and concrete pier near the dam are popular fishing sites, swimming is prohibited and “Strong Undertow” signs are posted.

Warning signs are posted on the river that boaters must portage around the dam.

Will County Forest Preserve spokeswoman Cindy Cain said after the man went into the river, his girlfriend, Hannah Tammeling, 22, of Plainfield, went in after him.

“They were by themselves and we don’t know why they went in, but a witness heard her yelling for help and called 911,” Cain said.

A Will County Sheriff’s deputy was in the area and saw both people near the dam. A Troy firefighter arrived and saw the man on the surface.

“The firefighter went into the water with a rope tied around him, but couldn’t find the man,” Cain said.

Firefighters walked along the shore and searched the river in boats until 9 p.m. when darkness prohibited further searching.

Ramos’ body was found further downriver late the following morning and Tammeling’s was recovered a few hours later.

Access points at Hammel Woods were closed during the search. Troy Fire Chief Andy Doyle said 30 fire agencies and five police agencies participated in the search, which covered a 2.5-mile stretch of the river from Route 52 to Mound Road.

Doyle cautioned Hammel Woods visitors to stay away from the dam, which he likened to a lake riptide. While water near the dam may look calm at times, it is extremely dangerous because of the turbulence at the structure’s base.

“It’s very hard to swim out of that,” Doyle said. ” … We really stress that people stay away from the dam.”
The dam, which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a New Deal project during the Great Depression, has been the site of previous drownings and water rescues over the years.

Cain said the Forest Preserve decided in 2017 to remove the dam and was scheduled to solicit bids for the project next week.

Marian Catholic holds off Hilltoppers in ESCC South opener

By Drake Skleba
For the Bugle
In their 2019 East Suburban Catholic Conference South Division opener, Joliet Catholic (10-4, 0-1) quickly fell behind the Marian Catholic (8-4, 1-0), 5-0, after 2 1/2 innings.

In the bottom of the third inning with two outs, senior center fielder Greg Ziegler’s 3-run bomb over the left field fence brought the Hilltoppers within 5-3 after three innings. In the fourth inning, senior DH Tony Fleischauer’s clutch two-out RBI single pulled the Hilltoppers within 5-4 after four innings.
A costly error in the top of the seventh inning allowed the third Spartan unearned run to score, for a 6-4 Spartan lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Danny Allen’s one-out double gave Hilltopper fans hope. Marian Catholic reliever, Alex Gonzales, closed out the Hilltoppers on back-to-back strikeouts.

Senior Mike Gurka allowed the only unearned run in the seventh, in his three hitless innings of relief to keep the Hilltoppers in the game.

“We didn’t start out the way we wanted too but this team always battles,” Gurka said. “I was able to get ahead of the hitters with my fastball and then use my slider and curve ball. We will be fine in the ESCC South.”
Senior second baseman Chris Knapczk singled to leadoff the sixth inning for the only other Hilltopper hit.
“We knew this would be a tough game with two good pitchers on the mound,” Ziegler said. “Mike Gurka, threw his best game ever as a Hilltopper, to keep us in the game.  It felt really good to hit the three-run homer. Hit a fastball up for my second home run of the season.”

“We battled back after falling behind 5-0,” Fleischauer said. “Greg’s three-run homer was huge and I was able to get the big two-out hit, to get us within 5-4. We then just fell apart at the end. “

“We dug ourselves a hole giving them four runs on only two hits, in the first two innings” Joliet Catholic head coach Jared Voss said. “Mike Gurka did a great job for us in relief, to keep us in the game. We battled and had some great two out hits but we can’t have three strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh.”

Gregurich Steelmen, salvage SPC 11-inning tie with Bengals

By Drake Skleba
For the Bugle

After firing four shutout innings of relief in Monday’s Southwest Prairie Conference thriller, the senior Steelmen third baseman, Alex Gregurich, saved his best for the last two plays of the game. Due to Sunday’s freak snowstorm, Monday’s SPC battle was moved to Joliet Central.

With the score deadlocked at 1 in the Plainfield East bottom of the 11th inning, the Bengals had runners on first and second. Replacing Gregurich on the mound for Joliet  Central was Noah Riley. In the batter’s box for Plainfield East, was third baseman Caleb Anderson.

Anderson hit a laser down in the direction of Gregurich at third. To the large crowd at Central, it appeared that Anderson had just won the game for the Bengals.

Amazingly, Gregurich was able to snare Anderson’s shot, step on third base for the force at third and just missed doubling-up Anderson at first.

The ever-dangerous Bengal catcher Sean Blanchard ( 2-for-5), stepped in to face Riley with two outs and Bengal runners on first and second.

Riley induced Blanchard to hit a roller to Gregurich at third. Gregurich’s fired a strike to Steelmen first baseman Jeremy Mason for the final out of the game.

Mother Nature with Sunday’s snow moved the Monday’s  game from Plainfield to Joliet.  And then she ended the game due to darkness.

“I just had to come up with the stop on Anderson’s shot, “Gregurich said. “I knew I had the force at third and I tried to get the double-play at first. On the final play of the game, the ground ball was like any other ground ball and I threw it perfectly to Jeremy Mason at first.

“Both teams played so well today. Robert Farrell pitched outstanding for us and my defense contributed to my successful four scoreless innings, of relief.”

The Steelmen (6-7-1, 1-2-1) got on the board in the top of the third. Steelmen No. 9-hitter, Osvaldo Lopez ( 0-for-2 R 2 BB) walked and went to second on a single from leadoffman James Zdanwic. Both runners moved to second and third on a ground out to first by Alex Rocha.

Steelmen catcher, Ethan Darling (2-for-4, RBI, BB) picked up an RBI groundout, plating Lopez with the first run of the game.

Meanwhile, both starting pitchers, Brandon Ruehle for East and Robert Farrell for Central were dealing.

Farrell took a one-hitter and a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Voyager Media Publications’ Week 3 Player of the Week, Nick Pratscher, tied the game for the Bengals at 1-1, when he deposited a Farrell fastball over the left field fence. For Pratscher, it was his fourth round-tripper of 2019.

Farrell allowed just two hits and the one run in his quality six innings of work. Farrell struck out seven and walked six.

Ruehle completed his day after seven solid innings of work. Ruehle allowed one run and just four hits. Ruehle struck out five and walked four.

In Gregurich’s first inning in relief of Farrell in the bottom of the seventh, the Bengals loaded the bases after two out’s before Gregurich pitched out of the jam and the game went to extra-innings.

Another hero for Plainfield East, was right-handed relief pitcher, Reid Erickson,  who fired four scoreless innings of relief of Ruehle, allowing just two hits.

“Brandon and Reid pitched outstanding for us and our defense made a number of great plays,” Plainfield East head coach Adam O’Reel said. “We left 14 men on base and our situational hitting was a disgrace. That is how one ends up in an 11 inning, 1-1, tie.”

“This was a great game played by both teams,” Joliet Central head coach Kevin Fitzgerald said. “Alex saved the game for us, with his outstanding plays, in the bottom of the 11th. Alex and Robert pitched outstanding for us and our defense made all the plays.”

“I told the kids, that this is how baseball is to be played. Great pitching. Great defense. And we can compete and win, in these types of game. It was a credit to all of our kids.”

The two teams will head back to Plainfield for the top of the 12th at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

Forest Preserve board hires firm to create engineering plan for Hammel Woods dam removal

The Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Board of Commissioners voted Thursday, April 11, on two measures that are designed to lead to the removal Hammel Woods dam in Shorewood.

The board approved a contract with WBK Engineering LLC and a memorandum of understanding with the Lower DuPage River Watershed Coalition.

WBK will be paid $104,100 to create a Phase II engineering plan detailing how the dam should be removed. The contract also requires the company to obtain a dam removal permit approved by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The permit must be issued before any actual dam removal work can begin.

The memorandum spells out how the coalition will pay for Phase II engineering.Image may be NSFW.

Coalition created
The Hammel Woods dam was built in the 1930s by Civilian Conservation Corps workers. The 4-foot-high concrete and limestone dam was built to create a pool of water for recreational purposes during a time when the DuPage River had a much lower volume of water than it does now.

In the 1980s, the Forest Preserve commissioned a study on the dam to see how it could be improved or removed. There was public resistance to removal for sentimental and aesthetic reasons, so the Forest Preserve Board moved forward with safety improvements to the site, including a portage around the dam for boaters, as well as dam repairs.

In 2003, The Conservation Foundation studied five dams along the river, including the Hammel Woods dam. The study was designed to improve the ecology of the river. The study concluded that removal of the Hammel Woods dam would allow aquatic species to move upstream and also improve safety. In 2011, the foundation completed a two-year watershed-based plan for the DuPage River, which led to the creation of the The Lower DuPage River Watershed Coalition in 2012.

The coalition’s goal is to preserve and enhance water quality in the river and its tributaries. The coalition also looks for ways to help communities along the river comply with more stringent EPA requirements related to wastewater treatment plants discharging into the river. The Forest Preserve District joined the coalition, which is made up mostly of municipalities that discharge into the river, ranging from Bolingbrook in the north to Channahon in the south.

In 2017, the coalition paid for a study of the pros and cons of either modifying or removing the Hammel Woods dam. Dam removal was recommended, but the amount of funding needed was not yet available to move forward with the plan.

Funding now available
In February 2019, the City of Naperville received a new wastewater discharge permit from the EPA and as part of that process, it had to pay fees to the coalition for river-related enhancements. That money was earmarked for the Hammel Woods dam removal.

In March the Forest Preserve brought the memorandum of understanding to the coalition and it was approved and signed by the coalition’s board. Later in March, Forest Preserve staff began the process to bring the agreement and the Phase II engineering contract to the District’s Board in April.

Once the Phase II engineering is complete, and the required removal permit has been obtained, the Forest Preserve Board will have to vote again on a contract for removal. The estimated cost for dam removal is $585,000. This work also would be funded by the coalition.

Removal of the dam would improve the river’s ecology and water quality. It also would return the river to its natural state, and eliminate the need for paddlers to portage around the site, creating a safer and healthier river for everyone.

While there were objections in the past to removal of the dam for sentimental reasons, that no longer seems to be the case, said Andrew Hawkins, the Forest Preserve’s director of planning and development.

“Now people seem to recognize the environmental, health and safety benefits of removing the dam,” he said.

Birthday Giving Program helps locals enjoy their special day

What makes a good birthday?

The number of presents? Who is there to celebrate? Just knowing people are thinking about you?

Sonika Menon has had 15 birthdays herself, but the Plainfield teen has made them special for many people.

In May 2017, Sonika was thinking about how some children are not fortunate enough to receive gifts or parties and felt compelled to do something about it. Using donations from her family, Sonika created The Birthday Giving Program and began working with local service organizations to find needy recipients.

“The first birthday we had was a 3-year-old boy whose family didn’t have much,” Sonika recalled. “We wrapped a plastic box with some presents and made a cake. To see the happiness in his face was great. His mom was really surprised (because) she’d never had the opportunity to do this.”

The Birthday Giving Program is now a 501c3 nonprofit which provides birthday bags and celebrations to those affected by poverty, addiction, homelessness and physical and mental disabilities. Sonika’s cousin, Rinna Talwar, expanded the organization to also benefit seniors and veterans who may face the same challenges.

In two years, Birthday Giving has raised money through online donations and local fundraising. They’ve delivered more than 750 birthday bags and baked more than 150 cakes.

“We get the name, age and gender from (charity) directors and sometimes their likes and dislikes. Sometimes we get to meet them and sometimes for security we just drop them off,” Sonika said.

While separate from birthdays, they’ve also put together Welcome Boxes for children forced to find accommodations in homeless shelters. The Welcome Boxes contain a stuffed animal, a children’s story and a snack.

“My brother manages our inventory and makes sure the cake mix doesn’t expire,” Sonika said.

“We’ve all gotten very good at baking cakes,” Rinna added.

The Birthday Giving Program has provided celebrations for individuals who have used Abbington Nursing Home, Alden Village, Boys and Girls Club of Joliet, Bridge Communities, Calvary Church, Deborah’s Place, Fellowship Housing, Gigi’s Playhouse, Hansard Center, HELPS Ministry, Lakeview Memory Care, Lifespring Ministry, Marklund Home Bloomingdale, MorningStar Mission, Mutual Ground, Streetwise, Wayside Cross Ministries, Wheatland Salem Church and the Individual Advocacy Groups of Bloomingdale, Glendale Heights, Oswego and Romeoville.

After the Birthday Giving Program was featured on CNN, associated chapters have started in California, Florida, Idaho and Tennessee.

Last month, Sonika and Rinna were recognized with Governors Awards, but both said seeing the effect the bags and cake have on people’s spirits gives them the most satisfaction.

“That sense of togetherness…when everyone gets to join in celebration has warmed my heart,” Sonika said.

Both teens believe their future careers will involve helping others.

“It’s been said you’re never too young to make a difference, I think we’re doing that,” Sonika said.

Coordinator Scott Long said putting one push toward helping different groups can benefit everyone.

“It gives the people in the community an opportunity to serve and give back locally, I feel a lot of volunteers get more out of it than those being assisted,” Long said.

The event began more than five years ago when groups at Community Christian Church and Plainfield United Methodist Church both planned volunteer events and realized working together would be more effective. Other churches, including Hope United Methodist Church, St. Mary Immaculate Parish, Al-Aqsa Community, Masjid Maraj and the Village of Plainfield are among those organizations participating this year.

The different faiths believe coming together to ignore “boundaries” and focus on what they have in common – service to the needy – is a way of living their faith.

Projects are available for every age and skill level, so the weekend can be a chance for families to spend time together, Long said.

May 4 projects include Plainfield Fire Protection File for Life, Lakewood Nursing and Rehab Bingo, Harbor Chase Crafts, Rosewood Care of Joliet Bingo, Solstice Senior Living Music With Jean, Hands of Hope Warehouse Project, Will County Sheriff Photo ID and Fingerprinting, Del Valle Migrant Headstart, Ready Set Ride, Roadside Cleanup, Prayer Shawl knitting, Hands of Hope fFood Giveaway, Birthday in a Bag and Happy Notes.

May 5 projects include Linden Oaks Stress Blankets, The Forgotten Initiative Journey Bags, Daybreak Shelter spring cleaning, Homemade Laundry Soap, New Life for Old Bags, Kids Crafts to Share, Packaging Meal Kits and Positive Post-Its.

“It benefits many different organizations. I’ve made a lot of new connections doing this. I think everyone meets people outside their usual circle and you’re always learning something,” Long said.

Last year approximately 1000 volunteers were mobilized to participate in over 30 different projects funded by more than 20 local sponsors

The Big Serve weekend will conclude with a free picnic for volunteers Sunday at Plainfield Central High School.

Route 66 Stadium gets upgrades

The Joliet Slammers are excited to announce several stadium upgrades that will augment the fan experience in 2019 and beyond. We thank the City of Joliet for their strong support in making these projects happen.

On the concourse level, fans will enjoy updated restroom facilities. In the women’s restrooms, the countertops have been removed and replaced with brand new sinks (the men’s sinks and countertops are scheduled for the same in 2020). In both the men’s and women’s restrooms, a fresh coat of paint has been added and the floors have been updated. Also new in 2019 is a playground set from Rainbow Play Systems of Illinois. Kids will be able to enjoy slides, tunnels, rock walls, a ship’s wheel, tic-tac-toe, and more with the new playground set.

There will also be an Adult Fun Zone located near the third base bar that will include numerous yard games.

The Suites have undergone several improvements during the offseason as well.

A carpet treatment has the carpets looking brand new.

The suites have also received a fresh coat of paint and the furniture has been updated.

Suites can be rented out on an annual or game by game basis by companies or individuals for a private, climate controlled atmosphere when attending Slammers games.

Following the path of Major League Baseball, the protective netting has been extended to the end of each dugout.

Fan safety is a number one priority and the team wants all fans to feel safe when enjoying a game at Joliet Route 66 Stadium. The main passenger elevator has also received a complete overhaul.

Although fans might recognize the car, everything else on the main elevator has been replaced and updated.

Team majority owner Nick Semaca said, “Along with these upgrades, in conjunction with the expanded promotional calendar already announced, the 2018 Frontier League Champion Joliet Slammers are very excited about the 2019 season and I know our fans will be too.

Advance ticket sales are already ahead of plan so I advise fans to get their tickets now before the best dates sell out.”

Opening Night is May 9 and will feature a celebration of the team’s 2018 Championship, including the presentation of Championship rings to the team. Group tickets, ticket plans, and individual game tickets are on sale now.

George and Monserrat Rodriguez enjoyed swimming twice a week at the YMCA.

The students and teacher chaperones traveled by bus from school twice a
week to the YMCA for the swimming lessons for eight-week sessions.

During the swim classes, students learned important lessons about water safety and developed a variety of
swimming skills. The free program was open to all fifth grade students at the above
mentioned schools on a first come, first served basis.

The SOAR partnership with District 86
and the Smith Family YMCA began in 2008.
