Plainfield duo advance to state final

The boy’s sectional bowling tournament this past Saturday proved to be a scorefest.

Scores were extremely high, especially in the morning three games and a game of 1,000 dropping you in the standings.

The prime example was Plainfield South, as the Cougars bowled 1,107 and 1,103 in the first two games to position themselves in fifth place, but a 1,002 third game dropped them to ninth.

The pressure was increased in the afternoon session as the teams were vying for a top six finish to qualify for next weekends state finals in O’Fallon.

The top seven individuals, not on a qualifying team, also advanced to O’Fallon.

Quite a few teams changed positions in the fourth and fifth games and as it always does in this sport, the final qualifying spots and order of finish were decided in the sixth and final game.

Minooka was the sectional champion with a score of 6,630.

Joliet West entered the final game in eighth place, needing to bowl well and pass two teams.

That is exactly what they did as the Tigers rolled a 1,026 finale and claimed the sixth and final qualifying position.
“I told the team not to panic going into that final game,” Tiger coach Reginald Lee said. “We’ve been in this position before, just make a clean shot and pick up your spares and we will be fine. That is exactly what everyone of our kids did.”

West was led by three juniors as Lucas Pirc finshed 23rd with a 1,301 over six games. He was followed by Kyle Siksta in 26th (1,294) and Julian Ramos in 31st (1,277).

The Tigers are returning to state after finishing in 14th place a year ago, something Lee thinks will help this group a lot,

“Being there last year and gaining all of that experience will really help this time around,” Lee said. “All of these boys now knows what it’s like, the atmosphere, the routine and everything that goes along with the state finals.”
Plainfield South finished eighth, just 30 pins behind West for that final qualifying spot.

The Cougars did have an individual qualifier, as senior Christian Knowlton placed 10th (1,381).
Knowlton is in rare territory as he also qualified and made All-State at this past falls cross country state meet.
He also knows the pain of being so close to qualifying as a team to the finals.

His Cougar cross country team missed by one position in his four years on the team.
“It’s a terrible feeling and we really wanted to go as a team,” Knowlton said. “I really haven’t been bowling my best during the season, but today I just really wanted to help our team make it and I wanted to bowl my best for them. I’m honored to qualify, but it’s bittersweet.”

Fellow senior and teammate Austin Griffith placed 16th (1,331).
“Today was such a roller coaster ride for us,” South coach Brian Zettergren said. “Our goal was an 1,100 game each one and we did that to start. I have never seen so many one pin remainers than we had today. We threw great balls right in the pocket and just couldn’t get that tenth pin to fall. We battled back the last two games, but just fell a little short.

“Christian was determined today to bowl well, I saw it in his face. He rallied the troops and he bowled his best at the right time.”
Plainfield Central also had senior Ryan Arens qualify as an individual with his 13th place (1,350). The Wildcats placed 11th in the team race (5,944).

“This is an amazing feeling,” Arens said. “You come into this sectional and in the back of your mind you’re thinking this may be it, the last time you ever bowl in high school. I wish the team could go, but I was shocked when I heard my name as a qualifier. I’m going to the finals and I just want to bowl well, have fun and experience all of it.”
North placed 12th as a team and were led by the senior trio of JT Hill in 27th (1,288), Tyler Wilmoth in 38th and Nick Miller in 39th.

Young JCA team features only six seniors and is looking to turn the corner as the year ends

When you think of the reputable and prestigious Joliet Catholic Academy, usually two things come into mind when discussing boys sports — Football and baseball.

Between the football team’s IHSA record of 14 state championships and the baseball team’s five championships since the year 2000, the boys basketball team doesn’t get much recognition.

The current Hilltoppers team sits at 3-17 (0-3 in the East Suburban Basketball Conference) on a season where there have been a number of different growing pains.

Hall of Fame head coach Joe Gura is trying to flip the script on the stigma of JCA basketball however.

“About 20 out of the 20 coaches when I asked about the JCA job said don’t do it because it’s a football and baseball school,” Gura said. “I told them, no when the ball goes up it’s a basketball school, it’s now my job to get us out of the down turn.”

The young Hilltoppers include just three seniors, six juniors, five sophomores and one freshman on the roster.
In the Hilltoppers’ most recent loss to Nazareth Academy, 47-35, it was the teaching lesson of resiliency and perseverance that Gura instilled in his young team.

“We started off the first eight games where we didn’t have football players because of the state championship, and then we had two injuries so we’ve only had a couple practices where we’ve actually had the entire team here,” Gura said. “We could have just died this game where we missed eight, nine or even 10 shots in a row but we never gave up and any point which is what I love.”

One bright spot in the Nazareth Academy game, and on the season, has been freshman guard Conor Sukel (10 pts/ 5 assists).

Sukel is a versatile swingman who can play any of the five positions on the court, with great court instincts while being built like a brick house.

“Believe it or not, Conor had a tumor and cyst on his brain and he had surgery where he was out two or three weeks,” Gura said. “He still came back from that, he sees the floor so well he could be a five or a one, he bands but boy does he understand the game well and that’s very rare for a freshman, the future is unlimited for him.”

Another positive sign from Gura and the JCA program is some of the success at the lower levels.

“The freshman level, the sophomore level are doing fantastic even with a lot of their guys up here on varsity which is so encouraging,” Gura said. “The future is very bright for this program, for JCA and for a lot of these younger players we have here.”

The Hiltoppers will end their season on a five-game road test, starting at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick High School in Chicago.

Local business owner helped residents during shutdown

National politics in Washington D.C. is having a direct effect on the lunch menu of a Plainfield eatery.
Steve Buresh’s Cheesecake Store & Sandwich Shop, 14210 Lincoln Hwy., is providing free meals for federal employees who haven’t received paychecks during the government shutdown.
“My two stores in Plainfield and Oswego see a lot of regular customers who work as air traffic controllers and homeland security officers,” Buresh said. “They haven’t been getting paid.”
In the last month, Buresh has offered about 60 sandwiches and sides free of charge with the hope of easing their financial strain.
“They have to show I.D., but really, I can see it in their faces when they come in. They’re grateful,” Buresh said. “Many say they’re going to pay it back, but I’m not expecting that. That isn’t why I’m doing this.”
There’s no limit on how many times a federal worker could return for a free meal and some have come more than once. Buresh said he’s an apolitical person, but did hope the shutdown ends soon. While he’s gotten some criticism for giving handouts from his own business, he said the community support has been greater. Other customers have offered money to cover meals for the affected workers, as well.
“This shut down is going to end and (these employees) will still be my customers,” Buresh said. “They’re very appreciative. I’ve made some new friends and after they get their mortgage and the important bills paid, they’re going to buy extra cheesecake.”

Cook County Circuit Court closed on Wednesday and Thursday

To ensure that nobody is placed in danger while traveling to and from court due to the anticipated historic cold temperatures for our area, Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans announced today that the Circuit Court of Cook County will be closed on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 and Thursday, January 31, 2019.

This means that – with the exception of bail hearings and certain pretrial matters for in-custody defendants at the Leighton Criminal Court Building in Chicago and juvenile detention hearings at the Juvenile Center in Chicago – there will be no court in session on Wednesday and Thursday in any Cook County courthouse. All cases set for Wednesday and Thursday will be rescheduled.

Jurors who are currently assigned to a trial do not need to come to court on Wednesday and Thursday, but they must return to court on the next date scheduled by the trial judge. Those who were called for jury duty on Wednesday or Thursday do not have to come to court on Wednesday or Thursday, and they will receive a new summons for duty on a future date.

Cell Phone Wars 2: The Mayor Strikes Back

Conflict between the mayor and a trustee over leadership ability continued to dominate a second straight Village Board meeting.

On Jan. 22, Mayor Rick Chapman presented the video and audio recording from a November committee meeting which included a presentation on sanitary sewer and filtration projects.

Trustee Barbara “Cookie” Kirkland filed a Freedom of Information Act request for Chapman’s cell phone records because she felt he was distracted and playing on his phone during the presentation of plans that will require millions of dollars in infrastructure.

“I decided if it was that important for our village president to be doing during a meeting, I thought it was something we needed to know about,” Kirkland said earlier. Chapman said the IT staff determined he had not sent or received text messages during the meeting and no texts had been deleted from his phone.

The two-and-half minute video Chapman played for the board does not show the mayor, but does show Joe Sullivan, a project engineer, discussing drainage needs.
“Two-and-a-half minutes isn’t a very long time, but it can seem so when you’re listening. I must have gotten in a lot of games of Candy Crush,” Chapman said.

As Sullivan wraps up, Chapman can be heard interrupting to question if a slide that reads “gallons per minute” should actually be gallons per day. Sullivan acknowledges the mayor is correct.

“I was paying attention…and (wanted) to correct this (at the first) break in his presentation,” Chapman said. “To be accused of sitting up here like a little kid playing on a phone or not paying attention is a shame.”

When Chapman said he expected an apology, Kirkland responded with “I stand by what I said and my conscience is clear.”

“The dignity of this board is at stake,” Chapman continued. “One lie, and if 10 people out there believe it, it’s a win.”

Movies and Programs and Books – oh my!

Beginning Feb. 1, students and community members within the seven communities making up Plainfield School District 202 are being asked to follow the yellow brick road to learning and join the Great Read as it features L. Frank Baum’s Classic “The Wizard of Oz.”

First published in Chicago in 1900, the “Wizard of Oz” is a work that has mesmerized children and adults alike for years.

“Wizard of Oz is a great choice this year. The very first book was written in 1900, the author, Frank Baum was first published in Chicago,” said Tom Hernandez, Director of Communications for District 202. “I say this kind of tongue in cheek, but it is true, short of the Bible and Harry Potter, I can’t think of another book that has had such an incredible, wide-ranging impact on American culture – in terms of cinema, theater, literature and popular culture.”

The program – now in its 15th year – began in Plainfield and has grown immensely over the years.

“It began as Reading Across Plainfield – it was a one off debate involving Plainfield Central High School and the Plainfield Library and they used Fahrenheit 451– Ray Bradbury’s book about government censorship as the hook,” said Hernandez, who joined District 202 in 2006. “From there, it grew into a community reading program that involved our schools and the Plainfield Library.

“We serve seven different communities, and if it is a District 202 program, we need to be more representative, so we invited the Fountaindale Public Library in Bolingbrook, we invited Joliet and then over the years, we gained Joliet Jr. College. Shorewood Troy was with us for many years until just last year when they had to drop out, I think for budget reasons. Lemont, who is not even in our district, but asked us to be part of the program because they were so impressed by what we were doing and were with us for a while until this year when they had to drop out and our most recent addition is White Oak, which is Crest Hill, Lockport and Romeoville. Now, this program encompasses all of the communities District 202 serves, all of those libraries and it is really, really cool.

The corroboration between District 202 and the surrounding libraries is what makes this program stand apart from others like it.

“It is different from those one book, one read type programs. What makes us unique is the long list of ancillary supporting programs that the libraries around what the book or the theme is.” Hernandez said. “I give tremendous credit to the libraries because they have taken it and run with it and that’s the way it should be. It is a celebration of literacy, reading and the community and camaraderie and it is not only about a book. The book is kind of like cheese on broccoli – you kind of trick the kids – they think they are eating something cheesy and gooey and it is good for them. The idea is to promote literacy, but we do it through all these programs.

“The libraries do programming in a way that school districts can’t, and this supports their mission and supports our mission and they do the bulk of that work and we do a great job. Everything we do is family oriented, and you will learn something and that is the school part. That is the magic – we want people to learn. This will spur someone to pick up the next book or go to the library and learn something new.”

The program kicks off at 6:30p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31 with Wizard of Oz trivia night at the Joliet Public Library Ottawa Street Branch.

The culmination will be Thursday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Plainfield Public Library, where patrons can watch the classic film “The Wizard of Oz” starring Judy Garland. Attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite character for a chance to win prizes. The Great Read Art Contest winners will be announced. No registration required.

With six minutes remaining in the first half of Joliet Catholic Academy’s nonconference basketball game with St. Laurence (13-14), Viking freshman guard Riley Galvin (10 points) buried a long-range three-pointer to tie the game at 14.

With snow falling outside in downtown Burbank an Angel avalanche was about to occur.

Led by JCA leading scorer Mia Bertino and 5-foot-5 senior Molly Hibner, the Angels closed out the first half with a 9-0 run for a 23-14 halftime lead.

The Angel run would snowball to 15-0 before St. Laurence would score with 5:36 left in the third quarter to cut the Angel lead to 29-16.

JCA (8-16) opened up a 37-19, lead after three quarters and roll past the Vikings for to the 50-28 victory.

Bertino and Angel sophomore guard Jenna Hernandez shared game-scoring honors. with 11 points.

Bertino, added four rebounds and four steals.

Hernandez, who was in early foul trouble, added four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

“The 15-0 run in second and third quarter, we are really proud of and broke open the game, for us,” Bertino said. “Our goal was to get everyone a chance to play some quality minutes for us. It was great when Grace Christiansen finished the game for us with the big three-pointer. Our whole team was excited for Grace.”

“I tried to do everything I could to help us get this win,” Hernandez said. “I battled through some foul trouble but was able to score some points and get some assists, too. My teammates, all, helped us to succeed.”

Hibner, just missed a double-double, with eight points and eight rebounds. Hibner also picked up three steals as the Angels, turned the Vikings over 27 times in the game.

The Angels held the Vikings to just seven total points in the second and third quarters combined.

“We had been playing poorly and had a long losing-streak,” Hibner said. “It was great to play so well tonight and get the big win. I was able to play well but we all played so well tonight.”

The Angels, behind four points off the bench from Kara Wilhelm, grabbed a 12-11, lead after one quarter.

The avalanche that buried Burbank, followed and the seven-game JCA losing-streak, was put to rest.

“The 15-0 run that broke open the game for us was ignited by our defense,” JCA head coach Jim O’Brien said. “We played outstanding defense, we ran our sets well and this was a great win for us, tonight.

“Mia (Bertino), is our leader and when she plays well, we play well. Jenna (Hernandez), was outstanding against St. Laurence’s pressure. Molly battles for us every night. I love the effort she puts forth.”

Shorewood police say a wanted man fled from custody shortly after being arrested Jan. 30. The alleged escapee remained at-large for about 30 minutes after running out of a hospital in Joliet.

Shorewood Police Chief Aaron Klima said officers were called at 11:14 a.m. with a report of a fight in the parking lot of Econo Lodge, 19755 NE Frontage Road.

“The situation had ended before they arrived, but they did speak with the people there and learned Percy Walker, 44, had an outstanding warrant,” Klima said.
Walker was taken into custody and brought back to the Shorewood Police station for booking, but reportedly complained of a medical issue. A Troy Fire ambulance was called and Walker was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.
Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Walker got off the gurney and told emergency room nurses he had to use the bathroom. While approaching the urinal he allegedly changed direction, walked outside and ran to the nearby street.
Despite dangerous subzero temperatures, Walker was wearing only a black Chicago Blackhawks hoodie over his clothes when he fled, according to Klima.
Shorewood and Joliet police searched for Walker who was “spotted in a driveway a few blocks (from the hospital) hiding under a vehicle,” according to police reports.
Walker was then arrested on charges of escape and obstructing a police officer. After being medically cleared, he was booked into the Will County jail where he is being held on $25,000 bond. Walker reportedly questioned “why (he) was charged with escape when they told me I was free to go.”
Willowbrook Deputy Police Chief Lauren Kaspar said the outstanding warrant charging Walker with retail theft and burglary was issued last month. According to court records, Walker has felony convictions going back to the 1990s with charges of forgery and theft in 2008 and theft, assault and criminal trespassing in 2015.

Joliet Public Works Director Jim Trizna receives Professional Service Award

The City of Joliet announced that Jim Trizna, Director of Public Works, received the 2018 Samuel A. Greeley Award at the American Public Works Association (APWA) Southwest Branch of the Chicago Metro Chapter awards ceremony.

The Samuel A. Greeley Award is given to an individual who has continuously served the public in an official capacity and contributed to the advancement of Public Works and thereby improving the quality of life for those who live and work within that community.

Trizna, who has worked in Joliet for 32 years, said this award means so much to him because of the hard work and time he has dedicated to his hometown city.

“It means the world to me because it shows that the time I’ve spent here in Joliet has gotten some respect,” Trizna said. “Getting this recognition from your colleagues and people I deal with in the professional world a lot, just shows how great of people they are that I can share this honor with.”

Trizna began his illustrious career as a civil engineer and steadily increased his responsibilities until promoted to public works administrator and eventually assuming the role as director in 2006.

During his tenure, the city has experienced unprecedented growth, nearly doubling in population putting significant demand on the divisions managed under Public Works which includes engineering, electrical, parking, fleet services and streets.

“A little bit of receiving this award is longevity,” Trizna said. “For this specific award, a individual has to work in a particular city or county for at least 30 consecutive years.

“There’s so many more things to take care of when a city like Joliet doubles in size, we’re the third largest city in the state now so there’s just a lot happening to say the least.”

In the last 10 years, Trizna has been instrumental in reviewing the development of the CenterPoint Intermodal Center and expansion, managed the divergent diamond and reconstruction improvement of Houbolt Road and reviewed the reopening of Chicago Street from Washington to Jefferson streets to provide additional access to downtown Joliet.

Trizna has supervised hundreds of projects over the years, but the CenterPoint Intermodal Center and Houbolt road renovation have both been extremely vital to the cities expansion.

CenterPoint is an ongoing project over the past decade with info structure plans while redeveloping roads and areas to city standards.

“We’re putting in a divergent diamond interchange, and for Houbolt usually IDOT would oversee that, so it’s a entire new learning curve for us, but going to a two lane road to a five lane road has been paramount.”

Trizna said working in the city for as long as he is has humbled him, and serving the people from Joliet has made him want to keep going every day.

“It’s been pretty special for me because a lot of the folks here aren’t from Joliet,” Trizna said. “After getting a job with the county highway department after college and coming back here, renovating some of the old parts of Joliet and just being with the people with the common goal to make this place a better place to live has been really great for me.”

JCA graduate Kaitlyn Williams is contributing at Lewis after trasnferring from D-I Loyola

Coming out of Joliet Catholic Academy, Kaitlyn Williams was recruited by several schools, including the University of St. Francis and then head coach Samantha Quigley-Smith.

After averaging 15 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Angels her senior season, Williams decided on Division-I Loyola University in Chicago.

For the Ramblers her freshman season, Williams played in all 30 games, starting in 26. She was second on the team in scoring, averaging 8.1 points per contest, going 59-for-196 from three-point range. Her D-I high was 19 points in her collegiate debut against Northern Illinois and earned MVC Newcomer of the Week honors. She was fifth in the Missouri Valley in three-point field goal made per game, averaging 2.0 per contest and reached double figures in scoring 11 times on the year.

After her inaugural college season, Williams decided to leave Loyola and transfer to Lewis University, joining the coach that once recruited her.

“When I saw that Sam Quigley went to a Division-II program and I live 25 minutes away from here and I am a homebody, it was very nice knowing that all the factors I wanted were at one place and that was the main reason,” said Williams, a Homer Glen native.

Having both played at Joliet Catholic Academy, the two had ties that dated back to Williams’ middle-school days.

“I have known Sam since maybe my seventh grade year when I attended Doug Bruno camps and she worked them because she was just graduating DePaul,” Williams said. “Then in high school, she recruited me to St. Francis.”

Although she came in from a D-I program, Williams said she does not feel any pressure to perform at a higher level – at least not from her teammates.

“I have fit in pretty well. My teammates made me feel super welcome. I put a lot of expectations on myself, but my teammates don’t put pressure on me to perform,” she said. “It is crazy how well we do blend with each other and our practices are so good. Our bench contributes just like the starters do and we have depth all the way to the 14th player and we need all 14 to get where we want to do.

This season for the Flyers, Williams has started all 17 games. She averages 6.2 points per game and has hit 28 of 69 from three-point land to go along with 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per contest.

Along with her talent, Williams also brings experience to the Lewis roster.

“When you have players that transfer that have college basketball playing experience, that intensity is already there.” Quigley-Smith said. “Not that incoming freshmen don’t have that – but she is coming from the Division-I level and played in a tough league and played a lot of minutes and she is making an immediate impact. Just the fact that she can shoot the basketball from three stretches out their defense makes this a little easier. Shooting the ball from three helps us tremendously and takes pressure off the bigs.”

One of those post players is senior Jessica Kelliher who leads the Flyers with 23.7 points per game and is less than 100 points away from becoming the Great Lakes Valley Conference all-time leading scorer.
Williams sat out last season after her transfer and expects to be an integrel part in the Flyers’ success the remaining years of eligibility.

“I am super happy that I made the decision to come here,” she said.

With ties to Plainfield, the Shimko coaching tree has extended throughout the Chicagoland area

For 25 years, George Shimko has been teaching basketball – and for most of that time his family looked on.
Now, they are following in his footsteps.

Through his George Shimko Basketball School in Oak Lawn, he coached his children, but never pushed them to go into athletics, especially as coaches, it just happened naturally.

“I have always coached my children like players,” George said. “I have never coached them like my child and I think that is why they became successful. I had the opportunity to play in college and to play overseas and I know what they had to do to get ready to play at the next level.”

He also got them ready to pass that message on to other athletes.

“Just being around GSBS Basketball since they were young and seeing the impact we make in kids’ lives and building up their self esteem and making sure they have confidence in themselves, that drew my kids into becoming educators,” Shimko said. “My background is in marketing and accounting and that was what I did until I started the basketball program, I worked for the United States Department of Agriculture for 20 years. The children have been around the game and how we can impact young people’s lives and they got drawn into education. I never forced them, they just saw the impact and were drawn into it. When you are doing something, you don’t know the impact you have on others, but the kids saw that.”

Currently, George is the head girls coach at St. Laurence High School in Burbank – the first ever head girls coach, as the school recently became co-ed.

On his staff is his son, Alex, who was one of the most prolific shooters to ever come through Plainfield Central High School.

“We were at Queen of Peace for four years and we went from 2-28 to 28-4 and got the best record in the school history and they closed the school in June of 2017,” George Shimko said. “St. Laurence, which is right next door, decided to go co-ed and we were hired as the first girls coaches at St. Laurence. In our first year, we went 16-14 and won a regional championship.”

Other than his dad, Alex played for Stephens and coached under Nick DiForti at Plainfield North and George knows with that knowledge, he will likely not be a head sophomore coach long.

“Dave Stephens is an awesome person and was just an awesome coach for Alex the years he was at Plainfield Central and DiForti, the things he learned under him as well were great,” he said. “They still have contact. Life is all about getting bits and pieces from other positive people in your life and from there, you build your own process, your own character and your own way to coach and I think Alex will be an excellent head coach when the time comes.
“He understands that process that becoming a good player means putting the work in, whether it is on the court or in the classroom and you have to have family support.”

George Shimko’s oldest daughter Kristen, a standout at Plainfield North High School, is currently the assistant coach at Argo, who is the No. 7 seed in the IHSA Class 3A Hinsdale South Sectional.

Kara, the youngest of the bunch, is a sophomore at Cardinal Stritch and is averaging 6.6 points per game for the Wolves and just last week earned her first collegiate start.

Kara was a varsity starter at Plainfield North her freshman season and tallied more than 100 points, but transferred to help her dad start the program at Queen of Peace, where in three seasons, she became the school’s all-time leading scorer — a record that because of the school closing, will never be beaten.

“Kara knew what we were trying to do and wanted to come with and help us build from scratch and the same with Alex, he was coaching under DiForti and he wanted to come with me and build it,” George said. “When Kara and Alex came over, we kept doing really well. That was a dream come true.”

The oldest child in the Shimko bunch, George, Jr., is also a coach, but chose to play outdoors in the dirt instead of in a gym on a hardwood floor.

George, Jr. has been a teacher and assistant varsity baseball coach at his alma mater Marian Catholic for 12 years.
“He is the odd ball,” his dad joked. “He loves basketball as well, but he was a really good pitcher and he played college at South Suburban and Benedictine.

“The whole family is involved in coaching some aspect of it. George and Alex are teachers, Kristen is getting her Master’s in Psychology and will be a guidance counselor at a high school and Kara is going back to the business side, as she is majoring in marketing.”

The Shimko children are not the only ones that have learned from George, Sr. over the years. The GSBS, which offer programming for boys and girls from ages five to 18-years of age with a complete range of programming from fundamental, developmental and basketball teams for boys and girls from third grade through high school, has allowed George to teach many of the GSBS family as well.

“It has been really exciting,” he said. “We have always wanted to put them in a situation where they enjoy the game, be coached and become a better player, so when you go back to your high school or wherever, we want you to succeed.

“We have 240 kids that are playing at 22 different high schools, we have 40 kids playing college basketball and 15 that are coaching. It has been pretty exciting, but it is amazing how fast the time goes.”

Angels take first in Class 1A, claim school’s private school-best 32nd state championship

Joliet Catholic Academy entered 2019 with 31 state finals, but that wasn’t enough for the venerable JCA athletic program justice.

The Angel dance team added to that number when it brought home the IHSA Class 1A Competitive Dance state finals title.

It was the 32nd title for the school, but first for the dance program.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled as a team,” said coach Shelley Poropat. “This is something that we have been looking for years and years, for it to come true we are all just honored to be apart of the great JCA history.”

The big stage is not something that was particularly new for the JCA Dance team, as Poropats squad came in fourth place at last year’s festivities, with an axe to grind in the 2018-19 season.

Poropat said with every year having the mindset to get better individually and collectively as a team, it wasn’t a straightforward path to the finals for her girls this year.

“We’ve had several injuries throughout this year which obviously made it very tough,” Poropat said. “The day before we left for state, two of my girls were quite sick as well, but as a team all you can do is push through and support each other the entire time.”

The Angels featured seven returning dancers from last year’s squad, and the 10-member team featured just two seniors, co-captains Abi Voss and Reese Hafner.

“We’re known as a football school usually, so its been really nice to give dance team a name,” Hafner said. “It’s been such an honor to represent this school and like I said show that we’re not just a football and baseball based school.”
For Voss, she said she has always been well aware of the accolades and the high standards her school sets, so brining home a championship was even more incumbent upon her.

“In my family, everyone has won championships here at JCA,” Voss said. “It’s finally so nice to be part of that conversation, and to bring home the title.”

In order to reach its goals, JCA had to rebound after a subpar performance being behind Morris, who posted a 93.22, while Clinton scored a 89.4 compared to JCA’S 89.3.

The resilient Angels had no quit in them the following day on Saturday however, as they posted a 95.68 to usurp Morris’ 95.08.

Not only did JCA win the the state title, it recorded the best score in Class 1A tournament history, topping Highland’s 95.05 mark from a year ago.

For Poropat, a former JCA dancer, she believes this year was just the beginning and this team set the foundation for more successful years of dance to come in JCA’s future.

“Setting that goal at the beginning of the year and then meeting that goal is very fulfilling,” Poropat said. “To get on the map, and to put JCA dance on notice with the great group of girls we have is something we take pride in.”

With the title, Joliet Catholic now has more state championships than any other private school in Illinois.

“This success truly comes from all of the great coaches we’ve had here at JCA,” said Dan Sharp, JCA Athletic Director. “Our families and here at Joliet is who we are. We are a blue collar, hard-working family who keeps passing down the high and proud tradition that is Joliet Catholic.”

At the age of 92, Tony Bennett is not slowing down and his latest recording, with long-time friend and musical colleague, Diana Krall, LOVE IS HERE TO STAY topped the jazz charts upon its debut and was just nominated for a Grammy Award.  The album celebrates the music of the Gershwins and includes the jazz standard, “Fascinating Rhythm,” which Bennett and Krall perform as a duet. The inclusion of the song on the new album, was the impetus for a Guinness World Record title for Tony Bennett, who in 1949, under his stage name of Joe Bari at the time, made his very first recording of the Gershwin standard.

In 2017, the Library Of Congress presented Bennett with The Gershwin Prize marking the first time that an interpretive singer has been honored.  The event was broadcast on PBS Nationally and featured tribute performances by Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Gloria Estefan and many others.  His signature song, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco, was inducted this year in the National Recordings Registry.  Bennett’s sixth book, TONY BENNETT: ON STAGE AND IN THE STUDIO, was recently published and provides an insightful look into Tony’s illustrious recording career highlighted by an extensive array of photographs, memorabilia, and artwork.

With worldwide record sales in the millions, and dozens of platinum and gold albums to his credit, TONY BENNETT is a musician who touches the hearts and souls of audiences with his legendary vocals and charming stage presence. Tony Bennett’s daughter, Antonia Bennett has been touring with her father and will open the performance with a collection of jazz/pop standards.  Antonia Bennett is a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music.

Having celebrated his 90th birthday in August of 2016, the milestone was marked by the presentation of TONY BENNETT CELEBRATES 90: The Best is Yet To Come a two-hour prime time special that aired in December.  A companion CD of the same name was released simultaneously and won a Grammy Award in 2017. That same year, Bennett became the first “interpretive singer” to receive The Gershwin Prize by the Library of Congress.  Bennett’s 85th birthday in 2011 marked the release of “Duets II” and made music history by making Tony the oldest artist to ever have a #1 CD on the Billboard album charts.  “Duets II,” followed up “Tony Bennett Duets: An American Classic” CD, released in 2006. 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the singer’s signature song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”  as well as the release of a new documentary film, THE ZEN OF BENNETT, created and conceived by Tony’s son and manager Danny Bennett. In 2014, Tony Bennett released a collaborative album with Lady Gaga, CHEEK TO CHEEK featuring these two legendary artists performing jazz standards. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Album charts making Bennett the oldest musical artist, at the age of 88, to have an album top the Billboard 200 and won the Grammy Award in the Best Traditional Pop Album category.
