The Louis Joliet Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was busy the past two months helping spread Christmas joy throughout Will County.

For the past five years the Louis Joliet Chapter’s November service project was providing hats, mittens, gloves and scarves to the Will County Center for Community Concerns. This year the Chapter donated 85 hats, 10 scarves and 93 pairs of gloves and mittens. Kris White, executive director of the Will County Center for Community Concerns thanked the Chapter and indicated the donations would be used in Christmas baskets for area families. The Center provides coats, gloves and hats, food and gifts to over 150 families each December with more than 300 children receiving warm clothing.

The December meeting was a Dec. 3 luncheon when members donated to two service projects: Toys For Tots and the Christmas Tree decorations for the Manteno Veterans’ Home. Member Bobbi Borbas took all the toys to the collection box at Life Fitness. They will be given to Will County children. In addition, members donated lights and ornaments for a Christmas Tree at the Manteno Veterans’ Home.

On December 6 several Louis Joliet Chapter Members sang Christmas carols at the Manteno Veterans’ Home. This is the second year members have spread holiday cheer to the men and women who served our country. Last year members learned the Veterans’ home was looking for new Christmas trees, lights and ornaments. Regent Mary Erhardt brought the project to the chapter and members were happy to help decorate the home.

The Louis Joliet Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution welcomes any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. Locals help USF women to nation’s No. 1 ranking

As if being the No. 1 women’s basketball team in NAIA Division II isn’t impressive enough, the way that University of St. Francis coach Sam Quigley-Smith has built her program may be even more amazing.

Kamari Jordan

Kamari Jordan

Of the 18 players that currently make up the Fighting Saints’ roster, 10 of them come from hometowns within 30 miles of the university, 16 are within 100 miles and all but one are natives of Illinois.

Seven of the athletes, in fact, went to schools in the greater Will County area with three players on the USF roster from Joliet Catholic Academy, one from Providence, one from Romeoville and one from Joliet Central.

“This is fun,” Quigley-Smith said. “From a coaching perspective, I have been watching some of these kids since they were in seventh and eighth grade. It is cool when you see them develop in high school and you are close enough to go watch them and then to get them on the team. These are girls I have been watching for eight or nine years and now I get to coach them.”

Currently, the Saints sit 16-0 overall and 9-0 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play after defeating conference foe and the No. 3 ranked team in the nation St. Xavier in Chicago.

“When you go on the road, you are going to get the other team’s best basketball,” Quigley-Smith said after the game. “They practice in here every day and when they are as good of a three-point shooting team as they are, I thought we did a great job for the most part on their perimeter players and that is hard to do.

“We are trying to lead up to be playing our best basketball in February and March and I think we are playing good basketball right now, but it is really important to play our best at the end. In the last few weeks, with our opponents getting tougher, we have to elevate our play, so coming here and beating them in their gym is nice.”

Offensively, the Saints were paced by Charnelle Reed and Bolingbrook graduate Kamari Jordan, who tallied 20 points apiece.

Jordan scored 14 points in the opening quarter, knocking down all four of her three-point attempts.

“My teammates got me pumped before the game and just told be to shoot the ball,” Jordan said. “There have been a few games where I didn’t shoot or I didn’t think I was shooting as well. They just told me throw it up there and they will get the rebound – but they didn’t need to.”

Jordan said the win over the Cougars vindicated the Saints’ position atop the national rankings.

“This solidifies everything that we have been working for. For the three years, we have been working hard and we wanted to be No. 1 and a lot of people, I think, doubted that the No. 1 team was us, but I think we proved it,” she said.

Working hard is nothing new to Jordan, who played for Tony Smith at Bolingbrook.

“I know about hard work. He pushed me hard early and I remember those things in times like this where I am tired or I am not shooting too well, I push through,” she said. “If you can get through one of Tony’s practices, you can get through this.”

St. Francis also got 16 points from Kaitlin Aylward and 14 from Bolingbrook native and JCA graduate Christina Ekhomu.

While the Saints had four players in double digits, the real win may have been on the defensive side, as USF held St. Xavier’s Kara Krolicki to 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting and only 1-of-3 from three-point land.

Krolicki came in averaging 20.88 points per game and was one of only six players in the nation averaging more than 20 points per contest. She was guarded most of the game by Romeoville graduate Angelica Osusky.

“We did a great job defensively limiting one of the best scorers in the nation – if not the best scorer in the nation,” said Quigley-Smith. “We limited her touches and she was a focus of ours. Angelica Osusky is really our unsung hero. She busts her butt on the defensive end and that is something that gets lost on the stat sheet. To hold one of the best scorers in the nation under her average or even if she gets her 20, to make her not shoot well is important.”

Even though the win will make sure St. Francis retains its No. 1 ranking another week, it is not something the players look at too much.

“Every time we try and look at that, our coaches bring us down a level,” Jordan said. “We have to stay humble because Sam keeps us humble. She is a humble person herself and that reflects on us. If we do try and look up, she reminds us, that yeah, we are No. 1, but people are coming for us.”

This season Osusky, Jordan and Ekuomu have started all 16 games for the Saints and aided in the success.

Ekhumo is second of the team in scoring, averaging 11.9 points per game and is first on the team with 65 assists. Jordan is fourth on the Saints in scoring with 10.7 points per game, while Osusky averages 4.9 points per contest.

However, even the players that come off the bench understand what it means to be part of the successful group of local athletes.

“Being a freshman, I have watched Christine, Ang(elica) and Kamari growing up and I have played against some of them in high school and now having the chance to play with them is a big honor and having Sam as our coach is great,” said freshman Ashley Hare, a Joliet Central graduate that is averaging 2.4 points per game. “And now, we are No. (1) in the nation and this is cool. There is so much talent in the Joliet area that people miss because they are always concerned about what is going on outside the area. But there is a lot going on at schools like West, Central, Bolingbrook, JCA and Providence and there is a ton of talent there.”

Quigley-Smith says the reason for the success of the program is not only the talent of the local players, but their character and upbringing.

“Our girls do a great job once they get here of working. They are not satisfied with a scholarship or part scholarship. They want to be better players and better people. We try and find great people from great families and I think that is what makes this all something special,” said Quigley-Smith, a JCA and DePaul graduate. “We have families that can come to games and come out and watch them. I was a kid that stayed home and I thought it was great that I could go out to dinner with my parents after the game and a lot of these girls get to do that.”

Not only do the players get to spend time with family after a game, they get to play in front of them and that is something Osusky says she feels has helped the success.

“It is great because we get the fan base out and I personally think it changes the game to have fans that can come to drive and support us,” she said. “It really means a lot to us.”

The one thing that could be a downfall to merging a lot of local talent on one team is trying to make a team out of former rivals. That, however, has not been the case at USF.

“It is a lot more fun with all these local kids. To be able to play at home in front of friends and family is a good feeling,” Ekhomu said. “It is great how we come together. With me coming from Joliet Catholic, we didn’t really like Providence too much because we were rivals and now I have a Providence player on my team and we just come together and it is a great community feeling. It is great to stay home and just represent.”

Joliet West holds on to beat Plainfield North

For the Bugle

The Joliet West girls basketball team knew that last week was important if it was going to remain in the Southwest Prairie Conference race.

In order to do that the Tigers also knew they had to win a pair of road games. That’s exactly what they did, capturing the second of the road games with a 46-40 victory over Plainfield North in a conference matchup on Friday, Jan. 6 in Plainfield.

The guard combo of freshman Jazz Evans (15 points) an junior Sara Gersch (12 points) led the way in scoring, while senior forward Raven Reed (7 points, 8 rebounds) paced the game with a 42-to-31 rebounding edge for Joliet West (11-5, 4-2).

Plainfield North (12-5, 3-2), which is also nicknamed the Tigers, was led by junior forward Kelle Knopp (14 points, 10 rebounds).

“We had a victory at Romeoville on Tuesday and we knew we knew we had to get two wins on the road,” said Joliet West coach John Placher, who’s team defeated Romeoville 49-44 on Jan. 3. “The girls did well and our bigs battled on the boards.”

Those “bigs” were Reed, along with fellow senior forwards Gloria Choate and Nicole Gal, and junior forward Alyssa Betlejeski (4 points, 6 rebounds) combined to give Joliet West 18 offensive rebounds.

“We didn’t take care of the ball that well,” said Plainfield North coach Reggie Lemon, who saw his team commit 24 turnovers. “Kelle Knopp can’t do it by herself. They had 18 offensive rebounds. You’re not going to win when you give up 18 offensive rebounds.

“But as bad as we played at times, we were still in the game. We have to take care of the ball and rebound.”

Plainfield North trailed by nine when Evans hit a 3-pointer with 3:05 to play in the third quarter to make it 30-21. Joliet West led 34-29 after three.

Senior guard Mariah Collins (6 points) scored on a nice coast-to-coast layup with 6:35 left in the game to cut the lead to 34-32. Joliet West then missed two free throws, but Plainfield North did the same with an opportunity to tie the game with 5:10 remaining.

Gersch then made a short bank shot to restore the Joliet West lead to four points. Plainfield North cut the lead down to three on a trio of occasions, the last one at 42-39 on a free throw by Knopp with 1:35 to play. But Gersch converted a pair of free throws 15 seconds later to up the lead to five and Plainfield North never got closer than four points the rest of the way. The free throws by Gersch were the only time that Joliet West hit back-to-back shots from the line in the fourth quarter as it was 5-of-12 in the period. Plainfield North wasn’t much better at 5-for-11 from the line in the quarter.

“I was a little nervous on the free throws, but I got them,” said Gersch of her pair down the stretch. “Our coach [Placher] said that we had to win on the road. We just wanted it more.”

Leading by four in the final 31 seconds, senior guard Shena Best (4 points) and Evans each split a pair of free throws to account for the final margin. Evans had 10 points in the second half.

“Sometimes it’s hard to come in as a freshman,” Evans said. “But in the end you can’t think you’re a freshman. You’re out there for a reason.”

Joliet West scored the first four points of the game. Senior guard Tierrah Farris (5 points) hit a 3-pointer three minutes into the game to get Plainfield North on the board. Plainfield North led 9-5 after the first quarter.

Plainfield North led 15-9 midway through the second quarter, but Gersch hit a 3-pointer and Evans had an old-fashioned 3-point play in an 8-0 Joliet West run. A layup by junior guard Krystina Wayne (5 points) tied the game at 17-17, but Gersch hit a long 3-pointer with 39 seconds left in the first half to put Joliet West ahead 20-17 and that was the halftime score.

Joliet West then put on the pressure to open the second half as Plainfield North committed eight third quarter turnovers. That allowed Joliet West to open the quarter with a 10-4 burst for the 30-21 advantage, which was the largest lead of the game.

“We came out in the second half and changed things up,” Placher said. “We came out with more pressure and the girls responded. We knew that Kelle Knopp was a good player and we had to stop her.”

Joliet council looks to bring Rialto Theatre drama to end

Megann Horstead | For the Bugle

The Joliet City Council recently sought to close the curtain on talks regarding the Rialto Square Theatre by securing an agreement and approving the adoption of a 2017 budget with a $500,000 allotment.

In a 6-1 vote, officials worked out an arrangement with the Rialto board that establishes a set of conditions and they are outlined as follows:

  • One-half payment is to be conveyed to the Rialto upon approval of the intergovernmental agreement.
  • The remainder of the allotment is to be paid to the theatre on July 1, given that a minimum of 30 live performances are booked and/or performed.
  • The Rialto must pay for both its 2017 payroll taxes and 2016 audit on time.
  • The theatre cannot request additional funds from city for 2017.

Recent revelations in the city’s effort to work toward an agreement were met with a change in circumstance when members of the Rialto Board resigned.

Mayor Bob O’DeKirk said the city continues to look at ways to keep the theatre moving forward.

“I have four appointments that are made by the Mayor’s Office that will be voted on by the council,” he said. “Because of the resignation of the board, the theatre’s unable to do any business currently. So, I think it’s imperative that we fill not only our four appointments, but at least one governor’s slot needs to get filled for the board to have a quorum to vote to do anything, including to make any payments.

O’DeKirk intends to present four names to the city council at their Jan. 17 meeting, at which time they will look to vote.

O’DeKirk said he would like anyone whose interested in serving the Rialto board to reach out to his office or send in a resume.

“I’ve already received dozens of people who want to apply for this position,” he said.

O’DeKirk suggested that besides making four appointments, the city should look to create a blue ribbon panel for the Rialto.

“One thing I’ve been consistent on through this entire process—and I’m going to stay consistent on—is I was never interested in a temporary solution to the problem,” he said. “We held people’s feet to the fire as a council because we’re not just going write another check and send it over to the theatre. Having said that, we’ve approved the intergovernmental agreement. We need to, I believe, continue on the road and look for a long-term solution. There are significant problems with the theatre with the finances.”

O’DeKirk noted they need to bring together qualified, educated and motivated individuals and community leaders and work together to solve the problem.

Plans to establish the blue ribbon panel will be brought up at the council’s next meeting.

Councilman Larry Hug was the lone dissenting vote. Councilwoman Jan Quillman was not present at the meeting.

Public hearing held for hospital-area TIF District

The city of Joliet is looking to advance the effort to create a tax increment finance district for the commercial area adjacent to, and including Presence–Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Joliet is looking to stabilize the neighborhood by using the economic development tool that freezes the tax base to allow new monies to encourage redevelopment.

Officials held a public hearing on the project to allow the public time to come forward with questions or comments. Also at that meeting, a consultant for S.B. Friedman gave a presentation regarding the project.

The city first looked into creating the proposed TIF for properties located on Republic and Springfield avenues in 2015, only to add Hammes Avenue and parcels owned by Presence-Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Officials will vote on the TIF District at a later date.

South Ridgewood Sanitary District is no more

The Joliet council sought to dissolve the South Ridgewood Sanitary District formed by Joliet Township to eliminate human waste pollution in Will County.

Approving the agreement allows the city to become the operator of the district.

In 2016, a dispute arose between Joliet and South Ridgewood Sanitary District regarding sanitary sewerage. The city said they learned that flow meters of the district have not been recording accurately the amount of sewage flow without repeated “blow-outs”, and is creating costs that deter Joliet’s economic ability.

The court entered an order in late December 2016 dissolving the district.

Easements for county’s sheriff’s new facility

Joliet officials took steps to accept a grant of easement from Will County to allow for the extension of a water main to provide service to the new Will County Sheriff’s facility.

Council action allows the county to continue its effort to construct the project located at the southeast corner of Route 52 and Laraway Road.

A portion of the improvements which will be owned and maintained by Joliet are located on county property, and it will allow water to extend to land outside city limits.

The matter was resolved at no cost to Joliet or Will County.

Young council candidate looking to bring change in 2017

Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez

Megann Horstead | For The Bugle

Joliet resident Alex Rodriguez envisions bringing change if elected to serve as an at-large Joliet City Council member in 2017.

The 23-year-old candidate said is ready to make an early impact on the state of the city by refocusing on the downtown.

“I’m going to work from Day One, even before I swear-in when elected in April,” he said.

Rodriguez, who currently manages a Starbucks coffee shop in Aurora, refutes the notion that having a plethora of experience in politics equates to success in the general election.

“Our government was designed for the people to be represented by the people,” Rodriguez said. “That’s something I really think is important.”

If elected, Rodriguez could serve as the youngest city council member to work alongside the current board of elected officials. He said bringing diversity to Joliet is important.

“It’s diverse when it comes race, when it comes to background, when it comes social status,” Rodriguez said. “We have a council primarily of an older generation, which is fine. But, where is the younger representation? It’s not in any branch of government whether it’s Joliet or throughout the state. It’s very rare that younger people get involved. I want to represent the young generation because we are the future of Joliet.”

Rodriguez, noting that writing Joliet’s future begins now, said decisions are changing the course of the city and future generations must get involved.

“We have the river walk; we have our historic buildings; we have the ball park; we have all the perfect ingredients to have something really special here,” he said. “But unfortunately, city council hasn’t been able to do it.”

Long before Rodriguez made his intent to run for Joliet City Council known, a passion to bring change brewed.

Rodriguez said he and his family moved around quite a bit in his early life.

He settled in Joliet when he entered third grade, at which time his parents divorced.

Rodriguez said times were tough for he and his family as they struggled to secure permanent housing.

Rodriguez said with help from Cornerstone Services, his mother received the support needed to turn over a new leaf. The journey to rise above his circumstances stirs a number of emotions, he said.

“It’s definitely something to really own a home just miles from Daybreak and Guardian Angels and to know that we once were there with nothing,” he said. “Now, I’m blessed enough to have a wife and have my first home here in Joliet. I care about people and I remember those days that we had to sleep in a group with many other people.”

Rodriguez said his experiences in early life translate well in driving his campaign.

“I want to see people succeed here, and Joliet has helped me to succeed,” he said. “It all happened here, and I know that we can do that for a lot of people.”

Kicking off The Great Read with Feb. 2 gala

The 2017 Great Read community literacy program will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter book with Harry Potter costume and team trivia contests at its February 2 Opening Gala.

The event at the Joliet Public Library/Black Road Branch kicks off a month of special events including an art contest and a Potter-themed family magic show.

The Great Read is a consortium of public and private organizations promoting literacy, reading, conversation, and community in Plainfield and surrounding southwest suburban partner communities since 2004.

Great Read community members are encouraged to read about Harry Potter and take part in the many programs scheduled in February at the 10 partner libraries.

The numbers border on fantastical — more than 500 million copies sold of the seven core books and $7.7 billion in movie sales. Not bad for a boy wizard who didn’t even know he had magical powers.

Yet, the numbers alone cannot begin to reflect the incalculable impact on world culture that Harry Potter has had since he and his two best friends searched for the “Sorcerer’s Stone” (or “Philosopher’s Stone, in England) in 1997.

More information, including Harry Potter-related books, films and a calendar of events is posted on the Great Read web site: www.greatread.org. Like the Great Read on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheGreatRead

The Feb. 2 gala is free and will feature a Harry Potter Costume Contest. Registration is not required. Attendees are encouraged to wear their best Harry Potter-inspired outfits to the event. Magical prizes will be awarded to winners in three age groups: Adults, 6th-12th grades and PreK-5th grades. Then, teams of up to five compete in a Harry Potter Trivia Contest. Teams must pre-register for the Trivia Contest at www.greatread.org. Members of the winning team will each receive a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card.

The 2017 Great Read Grand Finale is from 6-8 p.m. February 28, at the Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook. This is a free program and registration is not required.

Craft beer lovers open first new taproom in Will County

By Laura Katauskas

Staff Reporter

The world of craft beer has fast become a phenomenon of its own and the new owners of Iron & Glass in Romeoville are carving out their own niche in it.

Neighbors, friends, and now business partners, Eric Schultz and Colt Snodgrass have a main goal in mind—to share their passion for craft beer while bringing a new, affordable experience to a community that has already begun to embrace them.

Iron & Glass, 632 S. Weber Road, a taproom and bottleshop, is a fairly new concept; one-part liquor store, one-part tasting room where patrons can purchase a unique craft beer, cider or mead of nearly 200 choice varieties; sample a new brew of the 10 to 12 latest and freshest on tap; or both, bottle sharing with those on premise is welcome.

Snodgrass said the pair had seen places in other states for such an “on premise/off premise” type of establishment, but nothing locally.

“With our passion for craft beer, we knew that this was a place we would like to visit and thought we could try to bring the experience here,” said Snodgrass.

Both dads of young children, they decided it was one of those “now or never” moments, opting to seize an opportunity to make their passion become their business about three years ago.

“We also saw how prices for craft beer began rising and we want to keep craft affordable for the consumer,” said Snodgrass.

But it wasn’t an immediate win. After approaching a few different towns and villages, they were met with skepticism over a new concept foreign to most.

“It was a bit discouraging—some just didn’t understand the business model and just thought we were going to be a rowdy bar,” explained Schultz.

The love for the project had them revisit the idea, both their wives, Maggie Schultz and Christine Snodgrass, also partners in the business continued to brainstorm.

With the open of Romeoville’s first brewery Metal Monkey last year and business connections to the village, the door was open for the idea of Iron & Glass.

“Metal Monkey just opened and Starbucks was selling beer at the time (not any longer); we started thinking this might actually happen; if we don’t do it now, we will never do it; our kids were getting older…so we went back to update our business plan and presented it,” said Schultz.

In December, the husband and wife teams opened Iron & Glass and have already established a following. As craft beer enthusiasts watch for the latest brew, odds are they will land on the bottleshop’s shelves. Schultz explains they are calling distributers daily to ensure they are well stocked in the latest and greatest—that’s what their passion lies—getting the right beer in the right hands.

“That’s what differentiates us from a brewery,” said Schultz. “A brewery is constantly brewing beer; we are constantly ordering beer. There are different challenges for each—a brewery is more labor intensive; for us we have a conversation every day with people to find the best beer; and what’s new.”

And when it’s hot, it’s gone. Once Iron & Glass posts on Facebook or the app Untappd that something is in stock; a particular batch can be gone in a few hours.

“We are here to educate the community on craft beer to show how much great beer there is available,” said Schultz. We try to be into as much Illinois beer as possible because there is such great local beer but we also want to spotlight everything else that is available in the country.”

In addition to craft beer, wine, cider and mead are also offered.

“All the local fresh harvests really bring up the flavor profiles. Freshness is what you get out of this and that is what matters. We are trying to stay local so that means you are going to get the freshest stuff possible,” said Snodgrass. “We are not pushing one style. There is a beer out there for everyone, if not, there’s a cider. Please come in and taste; find out what you like; we will help you along the way.”

Iron & Glass will always have 10 rotating beers on draft, one cider and one non-alcoholic ginger brew.

“We have it because we are family friendly; it’s important to us, we both have kids, we want to have a place where families can feel comfortable coming into the store,” said Schultz.

They also are BYOF—that is bring your own food. Bring what you like, take advantage of the WIFI and relax. Every Friday the taproom will also have a food truck onsite.

But what they don’t have—flat screen TVs—and that’s a good thing.

“Initially, we want to get a strong community feel out here; which we’ve seen; we’ve already got a lot of regulars,” said Snodgrass. Everyone pulls their chairs up around the bar, talking and sharing beer, talk about beer and that’s all without TVs. People are taking bottles off the shelf and passing them around so everyone can share. That’s what we like; we like people and we like talking about beer! We want to share that.”

The endeavor has been life-changing for both families.

“It’s the four of us; we’re still pushing mops around with the kids running all around while we get ready to open. We don’t have any big investors, this is us. It’s a little bit surreal. Success and failure is all on us now—but we like that pressure,” said Schultz.

“We both looking forward to coming to work–how many people can say that about their job—I know I couldn’t say that before. We get to do what we love,” said Snodgrass.

“Its weird to think that one of the beers we’ve chased after for years to have in our home, we are now serving in our own store—surreal.”

Gateway Center finds new home in Joliet

Megann Horstead | For The Bugle

Gateway Foundation Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center is now ready for clients at its new Joliet location.

The outpatient facility recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1419 Essington Rd.; garnering support by city officials and other community leaders. Among those in attendance were Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Crest Hill; Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow; Joliet Mayor Bob O’DeKirk and Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet.

“Gateway is very proud to be part of the Will County-Joliet community,” said Jim Scarpace, Executive Director at Gateway’s Joliet treatment center. “We recognize that addiction is a psychological disease and physiology disease. We know it doesn’t discriminate as we’ve all heard with the opioid epidemic between not only this area but all across the United States.”

Gateway provides evidence-based services to support clients who struggle with drug or alcohol usage to achieve and sustain long-term recovery.

There are a number of ways that distinguish the treatment center, compared to other providers, Scarpace said.

“We’re the largest substance abuse treatment provider in the state of the Illinois,” Scarpace. “We’ve been doing this for over 40 years across the state as well as corresponding states. We pride our selves in being joint commission accredited and really providing… evidence-based, innovative [and] effective services. Our outcome rates are very, very successful treating clients not only with opioid use disorder but alcohol use disorder as well as other substances. We’re hoping we can make a difference in the community.”

The new facility can serve from 80-100 clients.

Manley, who serves on the Illinois House of Representative’s Human Services Appropriations Committee, said thanks must go out to the people who work at Gateway. Manley said nobody knows the impact that a lack of a budget in Illinois has had on social service providers more than she.

“We’re working everyday to try to change that,” she said. “In the meantime, you’re the real heroes here.”

Glasgow shared that sentiment.

“Agencies like yours are a godsend,” he said. “We’ve got all our specialty courts where we’re constantly looking for beds, for treatment and for care. Most of situations we deal with it’s [about helping those who enter the court system from making repeat offenses]. It’s that management. It’s that long-term management that we’re pursuing, and agencies like yours give us the resources.”

The treatment center is looking to hold an adult group program from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Medicaid certification requires that Gateway limit attendance to 16 clients.

“We’re hoping to grow from there and additional groups for not only adults but maybe adolescents as we get our footing here,” Scarpace said.

For more information or to gain admission, call the Gateway facility in Aurora at 630-966-7466 or the 24-hour call center at 877-505-4673.

Seven complete, graduate county’s Veteran’s Court program

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow is proud to announce that the Will County Veterans Court graduated seven veterans who have successfully completed the intensive program and are now living drug-free lives.

Veterans from several branches of the Armed Services and who now live in Joliet, Channahon, Manhattan and Romeoville graduated Jan. 11.

State’s Attorney Glasgow established the Veterans Court in 2012 to provide treatment, counseling and assistance to local veterans who have struggled with mental health and substance abuse disorders since returning home from military operations.

“Veterans often suffer from substance abuse problems or mental health disorders stemming from their service to our Nation,” State’s Attorney Glasgow said. “When they come in contact with the criminal justice system, we have an obligation to acknowledge their service and provide them with the treatment and counseling necessary for them to regain their lives.”

In Veterans Court, the State’s Attorney’s Office partners with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, the Veterans Assistance Commission of Will County, the Center for Correctional Concerns, the Will County Health Department and the Will County Public Defender’s Office to provide veterans with the treatment and mental health services they need to complete the program and restore their lives.

The Veterans Court:

  • assists veterans with honorable or general discharges or current members of the military who suffer from mental illness, mental disorders and/or substance abuse disorders as a result of having served in or having supported a combat theater.
  • offers an inter-agency, collaborative, non-adversarial treatment strategy for veterans in the criminal justice system.
  • provides veterans with a network of state and federal Veterans Affairs Departments in conjunction with social and legal aid agencies to assist with his or her specific issues.

Selected defendants are required to plead guilty to their crimes upfront before they are allowed into the court. They are required to remain drug free, submit to random drug tests, find work, follow through with treatment and attend weekly counseling sessions. If they comply with all of the court’s terms, they graduate, and in most cases their charges are dismissed or possibly reduced to misdemeanor.
