When you walk into TM Martial Arts Academy, you’ll find families out on the mats creating lifelong memories. And many would agree, it’s an experience they cannot find elsewhere. Located at 3480 W. Caton Farm Road (one block west of Essington), TM Martial Arts offers classes for students aged 3 years through adult.
In these classes, students work on technical skills like punches, kicks, and strong defensive stances. They learn how to use their voice as their first line of self-protection. And they work on physical strength and flexibility. But what makes the programs at TM Martial Arts unique from other activities? It’s the sharp focus on character building.
From the very first lesson, instructors help families set personal goals. And then they create a plan to meet those goals. “Some parents enroll their children to gain more self-confidence or focus or respect,” says Program Director, Karis Brody. “Others are hoping to see improved behavior at school or at home. But whatever the case, every student will experience growth in all of these areas. And we know it’s going to impact the whole family in a positive way!”
How does a martial arts program accomplish all this? First, by emphasizing the importance of self-discipline. The program offers a reward system for tracking good habits at home, which in turn builds self-discipline in students of every age. “The instructors are great and it’s clear to see how much they connect with and care about their students! I have seen my son’s improvement both in the class and at home, and am amazed at his progress.” Mary Jo Russell.
Next, it is through goal setting and personal accomplishment that inner confidence is developed. As students master specific skills, they test and then promote to the next level. This measurable progress teaches students the value of hard work. “Nothing valuable is gained overnight…true growth and progress takes time and lots of repetition,” says owner and Master Instructor, Timothy Harrison.
Lastly, there is a culture of respect for oneself, one’s peers, and for authority. At every class you will find students using the “7 magic words of respect”: yes sir, yes ma’am, no sir, no ma’am, please, thank you, and you’re welcome. They are taught to take responsibility for their own actions, and to answer questions with confidence. And they are taught how to learn, by focusing their eyes, ears, mind, and body.
The result is a whole-person experience that families can enjoy together. After 15 years of serving the community, the instructors of TM Martial Arts know that students will carry these life lessons throughout the rest of their lives. “My grandson started when he was five or six and made blackbelt. Now he is a U.S. Marine. The instructors were great and very helpful,” Doug Harris.
TM Martial Arts offers free introductory classes to interested families. And in honor of its 15 year anniversary, Master Harrison is offering enrollment specials throughout the month of February. He wants every family to create special memories as they experience personal, dynamic growth. Call (815)254-6141 to schedule your family’s first free introductory lesson.
