Weekend sports roundup: Benet volleyball wins own tournament

Once again the Benet girls volleyball team ran away with its own tournament championship, defeating Neuqua Valley in the championship, 27-25, 25-21. Benet’s Veronica Snelling was named MVP of the tournament, while Sara Nielsen and Lauren Barnes were also all-tournament selections.

•The Plainfield North Tournament featured several local teams in action. In the Gold bracket, Minooka placed fourth and Plainfield Central was fifth. In the Silver bracket, Lockport was third and Downers Grove South was seventh. In the Bronze division, Plainfield South was fourth, Plainfield North fifth, Bolingbrook sixth and Plainfield North JV 7th.

•Maine East defeated Leyden 25-19, 25-13. Alexis Ponzi tallied seven kills, Erkia Christiansen and Kim Sergey had seven assists each and Madeline Sielski had four aces.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Minooka boys and girls cross country teams were both victorious at the Normal West Invite Saturday. For the boys, Soren Knudsen was first (16:21), Jordan Freese second (16:40), Mark Dames third (16:48), Jack Sullivan fifth (16:53) and Matthew Mason eighth (17:30). For the girls, Ashley Tutt was first (18:29), Emily Shelton second (18:36), Mackenzie Callahan third (19:02), Vivian Van Eck seventh (19:51) and Ali Mondrella 14th (20:33).

SOCCER

Benet defeated Marian Central 5-0 as Nick Trakszelis scored twice, while Franklin Rutkowski, Jason Rowaiye and Charlie Kane also scored. Brian Gould made five saves.

SWIMMING

Plainfield swimming had a strong week, winning a triangular meet with 206 points, topping Lockport (180) and Wheaton (127) and winning the Peoria Notre Dame triangular meet with 126 points to Notre Dame’s 112 and 86 from Metamora.

At Peoria, winners went to Kate Meunier in the 200 IM (2:19.87), Jessica Davis in the 100 freestyle (54.88) and the 400 free relay of Veronica Banas, Davis, Kali Franckowiak and Meunier (3:43.62).

At Lockport, winners went to the 200 medley relay of Shaw Barney, Rayna Harter, Meunier and Banas (1:53.93), Davis in the 200 free (1:57.95) and 100 free (55.00), Meunier in the 200 IM (2:13.97) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.05), Banas in the 50 free (25.51), Harter in the 100 fly (1:02.10), Kranckowiak in the 500 free (5:23.77), the 200 free relay of Barney, Meunier, Davis and Franckowiak (1:43.55) and the 400 relay of Davis, Franckowiak, Banas and Kelly Hayes (3:47.60).

“This may be one of the deepest teams we have ever had,” Plainfield coach George Sam said. “We are two deep in every event and the girls put together a strong team effort to win 10 out of 11 swimming events.”
