For the Bugle
Hey you, go fly a kite.
No, seriously, take what Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke once sang about to heart and head over June 23 to Shorewood Kite Fest.

The free event will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cene’s Four Seasons Park. Professional kite flyers will demonstrate different kites including large show kites and sport kites. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own kites or purchase one at the park for high-flying fun.
Show kites can resemble giant animals roaming hundreds of feet in the air. Sport kites have designs that maneuver easily to perform stunts.
Historians believe kites originated in Asia during the fifth century and were used by armies for surveillance and signaling. Before the Founding Fathers declared our country’s independence, Ben Franklin used one to prove lightning is caused by electricity.
Kites aren’t the only summer event in Shorewood. Onetime kite-flyer Mary Poppins returns in “Mary Poppins Returns,” which will be shown around dusk June 20 on the inflatable screen at Towne Center.
“Lego Movie 2” will be shown July 11 and “The Incredibles 2” will be shown July 25.
The 43rd annual Shorewood Crossroads Fest will be held Aug 2-4.
Other summer events at Towne Center, include the Children’s Fishing Derby on June 23. Anglers up to 12-years-old can register starting at 7 a.m. for the event which runs from 8 to 10 a.m.
Music lovers can see The Wicked Vic Band play hits of the 80’s and 90’s on June 27 and Kashmir cover the songs of Led Zeppelin on July 18. Concerts begin at 6:30 p.m.
The Cardboard Boat Regatta will be July 20 at 2 p.m. Boats made entirely from cardboard and duct tape will race across the pond with prizes awarded for best boat theme and “most spectacular sinking.”
