Badminton duo finishes fifth at state tournament

Lockport’s doubles team of Jessica Miller and Haley Egelhof had a great showing at the state badminton meet, placing fifth in the state at the badminton state meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

In the fifth place match they defeated Hinsdale Central 21-9, 21-17.

The duo started play with a 21-10, 21-6 win over Oak Park-River Forest and followed it up with wins over Wheaton Warrenville South (21-9, 21-13) and New Trier (21-18, 21-19).

They fell for the first time in the quarterfinals, 21-23, 21-13, 21-14 to Naperville North, but rebounded in the consolation quarters to top Lincoln-Way West 21-16, 21-19. In the semifinals they beat Buffalo Grove 20-22, 21-19, 21-14.

The other Porters doubles team of Alexis Duda and McKenzie Ebel went 0-2 at state.

In singles, Hannah Burke went 2-2, defeating Annie Carmody of Oswego East 17-21, 21-16, 21-16 and Allison Drechny of Andrew 21-19, 21-19 to open play.

She then fell to Lauren Ho of Neuqua Valley 21-3, 21-7 and Honor Crandell of Hinsdale Central 21-16, 12-21, 21-10.

Jenna Franzen went 1-2 at state, opening with a 21-12, 21-17 loss to Emily Tunney of Sandburg before coming back with a 17-21, 21-17, 22-20 win over Lake Forest. She finished with a 15-21, 21-13, 21-11 loss to Maggie Tierney.

•Joliet West’s doubles team of Kortnie Hammac and Regan Kinser went 0-2 at the state meet.

BOYS TRACK

Minooka took home the Southwest Prairie Conference title with 149 points, besting Plainfield North, which was second with 84.

Winners for the Indians were Marcus Hayden in the pole vault (13-feet, 7-inches), Kevin Lam in the shot put (51-7), Steve Lasinis in the triple jump (42-11), the 4×200-meter relay (1:29.27), Justin Wolz in the 110 hurdles (15.37) and 300 hurdles (39.65) and Soren Knudsen in the 3200 (9:40.52) and 1600 (4:22.94).

BASEBALL

JCA suffered a pair of shutout losses to Marian Catholic, 10-0 and 9-0. The Hillmen did bounce back to beat St. Patrick 5-1. Drake Fellows went six innings, not allowing a hit with one unearned run, striking out eight. Justin Conant had three hits, while KC Simonich added two hits and Jack Surin had two RBI.

•Joliet Central dropped a pair to Stagg, 9-0 and 12-3. Jesus Gonzalez and Ricky Malmfeldt both had two hits in the 12-3 defeat.

•Lockport opened the week with a 7-0 win over Joliet Central. Ryan Gabriel went six innings allowing three hits. Gavin Lovesky had a pair of hits with a home run and Stephen Hill had a pair of hits with a double.

The Porters then topped Sandburg 7-1 as Ben Davis went the distance, allowing six hits and one unearned run with six strikeouts. Joey McGuire had two hits at the plate.

After a 3-1 non conference win over Aurora Christian, Lockport fell to Sandburg 2-1.

The Porters topped Elk Grove 4-1 as Josh Bentley had a pair of hits with a double.

•Minooka was swept by Oswego, falling 7-5 in 10 innings in the first game. Jackson Shepard and Luke Faifer each had a pair of hits in defeat. Logan O’Brien had a double and two RBI.

The second game was a 3-2 loss as Jon Butler had two hits.

The Indians allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose 4-3 in the finale. Faifer and Brandon Rossiter each had two hits.
