Megann Horstead | For The Bugle
City officials unanimously agreed to award a $32,400 contract to Clarke Environmental Mosquito Management during the Joliet city council’s May 3 meeting.
The vote allows Joliet to act on its plan to find a cost-effective abatement program focused on treating and eradicating a mosquito species known for carrying the West Nile Virus. According to the city, this species of mosquito can live in manholes, catch basins and inlets located throughout Joliet.
Officials investigated several treatment programs before settling on the project’s only bidder, Clarke Environmental Mosquito Management. The city will pay for the contract using roadways and contract services funds.
East Side Sewer Treatment Plant expansion
Also at that meeting, the city acquired three lots needed to expand the East Side Sewer Treatment Plant for the purposes of constructing a wet weather treatment facility.
The city council voted to take ownership of three properties – 303 Edward St., 305 Edward St. and 855 Adler St. – The city already owns the land adjacent to these lots.
Transferring the rights of ownership for the properties will cost $250,000, which will come from the city’s water and sewer improvement fund.
Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrades
The city also agreed to award a $190,020 contract for building upgrades at the Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Tri-State Enterprises will serve as the contractor for the project, which includes tile and roof replacements that will affect the blower building, the administration building and the filter building.
A 2 percent difference in bid amounts gave Tri-State Enterprises an opportunity to match a local offer provided by Malcoor Roofing of Illinois. The rebid allowed officials in Joliet to review and consider Tri-State Enterprise’s new offer. The contract will be paid using the city’s water and sewer improvement fund.
