Lockport Township High School District 205 announced that it once again ranked in the top 10 percent of all high schools in the nation, according to recent rankings released by the Washington Post.
The school is the only Will County high school to make the list and ranked 68th in the state of Illinois and 1,974 out of nearly 23,000 high schools nationwide for effectively preparing students for college. The ranking makes LTHS one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools, according to the Washington Post.
“[A school’s] appearance on this list means that you are trying much harder than most schools to expose your students to the demands of college,” said Jay Mathews, reporter for the Washington Post who compiled the rankings.
Since 1998, Newsweek Magazine has ranked public high schools. Five years ago, The Washington Post took over the ranking, using a similar formula of measurement – divide the number of advanced placement, international baccalaureate or other college-level tests a school gives by the number of graduating seniors.
The Washington Post also added private schools to the rankings.
“This index serves as a measure of the rigorous curriculum offered within the school, which impacts the entire school environment,” District 205 assistant superintendent Brett Gould said. “Michelle Conway, our AP coordinator, does a remarkable job supporting the program, students and teachers, who are the core of our success.”
Gould added that the district’s high ranking in the state reflects its dedication to give LTHS students the best opportunities.
“And, without the efforts of our faculty, feeder schools and families, we wouldn’t be so successful,” he said.
