Good news – the White Oak Library District’s Lockport Branch will be hosting an official FIRST LEGO® Robotics League this fall for 4th through 8th graders! It is being mentored by veteran robotics club teacher John Schulz and Children’s Librarian Elizabeth Sanderson.
The goal of this team is to challenge kids to think like scientists and engineers. Students will research a real-world engineering challenge, develop a solution, and compete with LEGO® based robots of their own design in a fun team-oriented environment. This year’s theme is Into Orbit and the possibilities of Space are, well, endless. More information can be found on the official website https://www.firstinspires.org/
Children who are interested in being a part of this team, which will meet weekly during September, October, and November, and culminate with a December competition, should bring their parents to an informational meeting at the Lockport Branch Library on Thursday, August 16, 2018, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.
At the informational meeting, we will provide information regarding the program and meeting times, and answer any questions you or your student might have. Registrations will be taken after the meeting on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited. We expect the cost to be about $50 per student to cover competition fees.
If you are interested in joining and are unable to attend the meeting, please contact LEGO® robotics mentor John Schulz at porterbots@gmail.com
NOTE: This is not a LEGO® building club. Although we use LEGO® products, our focus is on learning how to apply scientific principles to solve problems and apply that learning in a competitive setting – the hardest fun students will ever have. This may not be the right group for students who are primarily interested in building objects with LEGOs®.
